MY EXPERIENCE AS A DJ
I began learning the craft of DJ’ing back in 2002 when I was 12 years old, on a pair of Numark TT-1625 direct-drive turntables and Stanton 2 channel analog mixer. The only vinyls I had were records I bought at the local record stores with money I made from the paper route I worked at the time. As I progressed through high school and made more money, I upgraded my DJ equipment to include a Pioneer CDJ-800 and Numark DXM 06 mixer.
During this time I was also learning Music Production while putting together a home studio and teaching myself programs like Fruity Loops, Reason and Pro-Tools. By age 15 I gave myself the name DJ Replay, and it wasn’t long before I was asked to make special DJ mixes complete with sound FX for my high school’s Hip-Hop dance team to use at basketball games.
By 2007 I was a Freshman attending CSU Chico and preparing to apply for the Recording Arts & Music Industry program. That was when I finally started offering DJ services, establishing a $50/hour pay rate almost from the very beginning. I operated with legitimate contracts and rental equipment that included various small PA system configurations.
My clients included fraternities and sororities, classmates, fashion show organizers, and concert promoters. I soon had opportunities to DJ for well-known Bay Area Hip-Hop artists like San Quinn and Beeda Weeda, as well as local artists from different areas of CA attending Chico State like Eye-Que, Tybox, Willdy Diamond, and others. I performed not only at backyard parties and small venues, but also at large concerts along with my band mate Eye-Que at the Bell Memorial Union on campus.
As I waited to be accepted into the impacted Recording Arts program, I decided to join the Chico State radio station team at KCSC and ran a show called “Flavor of the Week” for 2 consecutive semesters through 2010. During this time, I was concurrently enrolled in elective classes focused on the Broadcasting and Radio industries.
Since graduating college I have DJ’ed in various places in the Reno-Tahoe area while also operating as a Sound Engineer, including as a resident DJ at Masque nightclub and Northstar Ski Resort. It has often been my responsibility to select house music at venues I’ve consistently operated such as Brew Brothers, Novi, Cypress Concert Hall, Northstar Village, and others in the area to set the vibe for the featured performers of the night.
I often receive compliments from clients for my music selection whenever I’m hired as a Sound Engineer/AV Tech Operator for corporate events at properties like Tahoe Blue Event Center, The Nugget, Renaissance Reno, and other Hotel Resorts in the area. These gigs have led to DJ’ing after-parties or other events for the same clients.
